How the Percentage to GPA Calculator works

Converting a percentage into a 4.0-scale GPA is the reverse of the GPA-to-percentage conversion. As with that tool, there is no universal official formula, so this calculator uses the widely accepted linear assumption that 100% corresponds to a 4.0.

It is handy when a transcript or application uses percentages but a U.S.-style 4.0 GPA is requested.

Formula & grading scale

For example, 85% becomes (85 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.40. The result is capped at 4.0.

A note for international students

If you studied outside the United States, your transcript may use a percentage, a 10-point scale, or a classification such as first-class or distinction. A linear percentage-to-GPA estimate is a reasonable starting point, but many U.S. universities and credential-evaluation services apply their own conversion rules. When you are submitting an official application, ask the institution which method it uses rather than relying on any single online estimate — including this one.

Percentages, letter grades and GPA

Many schools do not convert a raw percentage straight to a GPA. Instead, they first map the percentage to a letter grade using grade bands, then assign that letter its point value. A common band might treat 93–100% as an A (4.0), 90–92% as an A- (3.7), 87–89% as a B+ (3.3), and so on. Under that approach, two students with 90% and 92% land on the same GPA, even though a strictly linear formula would separate them. That is why the linear estimate here can differ by a few tenths from a band-based result. If your institution publishes its grade bands, working through them gives the most faithful GPA; this calculator is best for a fast, reasonable approximation when those bands are not in front of you.
